Discworld MUD - The Waterways Domain

Arrrr matey! Welcome to the home port of the waterways domain. This page contains information useful to people interested in applying to Waterways. If you're not, you'll probably be bored 'round about now. Feel free to hit 'back' and do something more interesting!

Still here? Funky. Let's get down to business, then. Waterways is a little different from your standard area-based domain, such as AM or Sur. The focus of our development is on physics, not geography . Instead of writing places and NPCs, we write systems, such as

  • player-sailable and -fightable ships.
  • NPC-controlled mercantile shipping ripe for plunder.
  • Randomly generated shipwrecks just begging to be looted.

The upshot of all this is as follows: if you want to spend your days writing beautiful descriptions that make men weep and women swoon, then Waterways is probably not for you. Waterways creators are expected to code. You're not expected to be hacking on the driver, but you need to be able to create systems of interacting objects.

Now, it doesn't matter if you don't know how - obviously if you do, that's great, but we can teach you. However, you must be willing to learn. This will require patience and application . You will need to practice writing code, just like you need to practice when you learn a musical instrument. One of the hardest things about coding well is the mindset - the ability to plan out solutions to problems, step by step, where each step is simple enough for a pile of digital circuitry to understand. That is the core of programming, everything else is just a toolset. If you are willing to learn that, then we're willing to teach it. And personally, I find understanding something at that level of detail is one of the more thrilling experiences available.

If you're still reading by this point, you obviously don't scare easily! Well, that, or you've given up on applying and are just reading for laughs. However, assuming you're still interested in applying, there's not a whole lot left to say. The following are the requirements which an applicant should possess. If you don't satisfy them, you can chat to me (Ptoink) about applying, but don't get your hopes up.

    • At least one character with more than 10 days online time.
    • At least one character who first logged on more than 8 months ago.
    • Knowledge of the Discworld setting - physics, magic, etc. This can come from the books, from the game or preferably both.
    • Willingness to work :)

If you fulfill the above requirements and are still interested in applying, then good luck!
