History of Discworld MUD

 — the mud that launched a thousand telnets

Discworld MUD was founded in 1991 by David Bennett (Pinkfish) and was first opened to players in 1992. Discworld uses its own custom Mudlib which was released in 1993.

During its long history Discworld has been hosted on three different continents and on more machines than we can remember. This has led to a very international feel to the mud with players, creators and administrators from all over the world — depending on when you login you're likely to find a preponderance of Europeans, Americans or Australians.

Publicity

Over the years Discworld has been advertised and reviewed in a number of places:

Discworld Today

Discworld is one of the world's largest LPMuds. It is currently hosted at Ceres' house on a DSL line and runs on an Athlon 1.73G with 3 SCSI II disks and 1.5G of RAM. The system runs RedHat Linux and Discworld uses the FluffOS driver (a fork of the LP MudOS driver) with the Discworld mudlib. Our player limit is set to 300 concurrent players (excluding creators).

Some people have asked for a photo of the Discworld machine. The machine is on the left (marked atuin), in the centre is the APC uninterruptable power supply. The blue boxes on top of it are an 802.11b access point and an 8 port switch for the home network. The small white box is a four port hub that connects to the DSL modem behind it. On the right is igor, Ceres' firewall and also the home of the Discworld test site. At the top of the picture is a 20" box fan that helps keep everything cool since the machines generate a lot of heat.
