The Mortificer family was founded by Pendrake in Ankh-Morpork
Unlike many of the families of Ankh Morpork, the Mortificers do not have a history that they can trace back to ancient times. The oldest known member is Orton Mortificer (now deceased), the father of Takura and Pendrake. Little is known of Orton other than the facts that he joined the Assassins' Guild, never graduated but did enjoy watching the eel wrestling that was once so popular in the city.
The name has been researched and is a contraction of the Latatian words "Mort" and "Artificer". These translate as "death" and "skilled craftsman" repectively. A connection to "Mortifer" meaning "lethal" is another possibility. The name would translate to modern Morporkian as "Skilled craftsman of death" and this may explain the difficulties in researching the family. It is possible that their history is a secret and sinister one and current members may well know more than they admit.
The family is not as close as some. Sometimes the members seem more like a group of individuals than a team, although they are known to pull together when necessary. Professions that involve death-dealing are favoured by the family. They join various guilds but slant more towards ruthless and stylish slaying than normal. They maintain a professional attitude to their work however and are far from mindless psychopaths. The fact that the members seem to live up to their name (or aspire to do so) lends weight to the theory that the members know more of the history of the family than they are willing to tell.
- The members are:
- Darnell, Kilstrin, Liameria, Malandra, Mawworm, Nosbor, Pendrake, Rainflake, Rhodry, Sean and Takura
