(This page is under construction.)

Hopefully sometime in the future you will find everything you need to know regarding rituals and commands. As there allready are a page on the DW server that deals with spesific rituals and commands, this page will only deal with ritual guidelines at the moment. Later ritual ideas might be added with more information on each new ritual as opposed to the brief version you will find on the guild update page.

RITUAL GUIDELINES

  • There will be no insta-death ritual.
  • There will be no ritual that allows you to cause direct damage to an opponent.
  • There will be no ritual allows you to attack someone in a remote, undefendable, anonymous kind of way.
  • Toasted, buttered tea cakes make an appetising mid-day snack.

    RITUAL IDEAING ON THE BOARD

The priests guild board has it's share of posts for ideas, and many of them go unreguarded for a lot of reasons. Some of them are just flat out not going to happen and some are just not presented in a manner that sells people on them.

I am going to endevor to write a bit on what makes an idea "good". Ie, what kind of ideas are going to get coded, and what are not. This may sound unfair, but it is quite possible that an idea can be revamped to fit into the game with a little thought, and who better to do that than the person who comes up with it?

Anyway, the following is a list of criteria that an idea should fall roughly within. A few misses here and there doesn't mean the idea isn't worth talking about, only that it needs a little work, or is good enough to be an exception.

    1) Does it fit into the spirit of Discworld? Is it, at the least, Prattchettesque? Either way, ideas that are in direct opposition of the Law of the books aren't feasible, so count this as 3 strikes.

    2) Is it original? I don't mean that ideas from the books aren't good additions (they certainly are), but outside the scope of the books, is this an idea that will add some uniqueness to the priestguild, or the MUD as a whole? Ideas that mimic the commands/spells of another guild are not as likely to get coded as ideas that are truely unique to the guild.

    3) Does the idea damage the delicate balance between guilds? This is most obvious in the PK applications of the idea, but otherwise apparent, as well. Are priests with this new idea going to suddenly become much more powerful than other guilds? Or will the difference be quickly adapted to or not visible at all?

    4) Does the new ritual/command do something that is forbidden? For rituals, this is usually "Does it deal direct damage?" or "Is it an instant death ritual?"

    5) Is it useful? If someone breaks their back getting this coded, will anyone actually use it? Sure, a ritual that lets you turn yourself bright green SOUNDS cool, but who would use it once the novelty wore off?

Okay, take a look at your idea and see how it shapes up. One strike isn't bad (depending on what it is, it may even get coded, as is), two needs a little work, and three needs a lot of work. If there are more than three strikes, then maybe you're going at it the wrong way?

Let's take the recent "golem that carries stuff" idea and run it through the paces. It doesn't do damage, it's certainly useful, and probably won't unbalance anything. The other two checks are where this idea runs into trouble. First of all, it's a "me too" idea. Witches and wizards already have something that does the same thing (give or take a few details), and coding one for the priests would certainly not make them more unique. The real biggie, though, is that the books specificly state that no one makes golems anymore. What the book says is law, unless it is something that a MUD really can't do without (like no assassin control over killing in AM).

It checks out? Or it only has a few problems? Or you just out and out don't want to let it go? What should you do with it, then?
There are a lot of places you can send ideas, but here are some of the best ways to get them noticed.

    1) If it direcly involves an existing ritual, idea that ritual and write it there. IE:

idea ritual minor shield I think it would be great if each guild got their own version of the shield. For instance, Guffies could be covered in fluff that would absorb part of the damage and Gappics would have their clothing made iron hard.

    2) Mail a liaison with it. We know both what kind of ideas need to be directed to who, and what parts of your idea are weak. If nothing else, we can tell you what part of your idea you should rethink to make it much more likely to be coded.

The liaisons for this wonderful guild are myself (Akane), Raffi, and Pingu.

    3) Post it to this board. Things really do get taken down that are posted here. The down side to this is, there is always a chance it'll get missed in the shuffle or a sudden flurry of posts. I've seen it myself.

Good, now you've decided what to do with it. Now you have to sit down and write it. Here are a couple of tips:
    1) Be detailed. Creators, by and large, work on inspiration. If you can write something that really grabs the creator's attention and makes them really, really, WANT to code it, it's much more likely to get done.

    2) Justify the ritual. What is the need that it fills, how does it fit into the theme of the MUD, does it compensate for a shortcoming of the guild?

    3) Keep it simple. I know that seems a direct contradiction of #1, but it isn't. Does the idea really need to take into account thirty different things? Most likely it won't.

    4) Don't insult the creators. This means both in intelligence (blatant sucking up, for instance, is the domain of liaisons only. we kiss the ass around here) or directly (ie, saying things like "since it seems to be taking so long to get..." and the like). We're here of our own volition (except the ones doing community service, of course, but i nev'ah did nuffin'), and we're people beings just like you. Except our pornographic haiku are better.

That about wraps it up. Anyway, keep in mind that this is a game. Some things are just not fair, and others just don't hold with the theme. If one of your ideas isn't coded, don't give up. Everyone can contribute, it just takes a little work.
