Coping with Death

Name

Dying - What to do when your blood runs out?

Dying

Discworld just wouldn't be the same without the ever-present chance of meeting Death. If you're unfortunate enough to pick a fight with the wrong barbarian, wander into deep water when you can't swim, or find some other creative and interesting way to die, you'll find yourself a ghost with your corpse at your feet.

Don't despair! Every player starts their adventure with seven lives (and it's possible to buy more), so all you need to do now is get some help to find yourself in the material world again.

In Case of Death

First off, should you find yourself in the afterlife, check to see if you know where you are. If not, your best choice is to stay by your corpse while you consider your options. You'll need to be able to get back to your corpse to retrieve your belongings.

Second, you should be given a book, which explains the options you have. Ask other players for help if you're not sure what to do. If it's still available to you, the newbie channel is a good place to start; if not, you can ask a newbiehelper for advice anyway. Type "helpers" for a list of newbiehelpers online.

Alternatively, you can check and see what other players are on with the qwho command. This will give a list of everyone currently playing; you can then ask some of these players if they can help or if they can point you toward someone who can.

Priests of Pishe

Many older players will be willing to stop and offer advice, but your best choice for help as a ghost will be to find a Pishe priest. To see a list of Pishe priests currently playing, enter "who pishe" and use the tell command to politely ask for help.

With some luck, someone will find you where you are and bring you back to life with a ritual. Others may ask you to move to a standard place. If you can't find someone to help you, you will need to go to one of the several locations or shrines where you will automatically be raised from the dead.

Remember, these priests are just players, like you, so do be polite. It is their choice whether or not to resurrect you, and they might well ask money or other favours for their service. If they help you, you should remember to thank them.

Back From the Dead

Once you've found yourself in a body again, you will need to retrieve any items from your corpse. (If your corpse is in a deadly area, ask for help and use the "permit" command to allow someone else to help you get your belongings back.) The quickest way to get your items and wear them again is to use the following sequence of commands:

> get all from corpse
> equip

Repeat the above until you've gotten everything and be sure to examine your corpse one last time to check.

A word of Caution

Be aware that your corpse will decompose over time and that anything on it will fall to the ground. If you log out right after a death, your corpse will still stay around, and you risk losing your inventory if you don't return soon.
